TruTails strives to produce beautiful kittens that are excellent examples of the Maine Coon breed, and future "TruTails Legends." Because of the type & quality of our breeding cats MOST Trutails kittens will have "show potential." Does this mean EVERY TruTails kitten will be show quality or placed in a show home? Of course not... some kittens will be companion/pet quality. "Pet kittens" are not suitable for showing usually due to some minor fault in type, or we simply feel they do not have the attitude necessasry to deal with the stress of the show scene. Also, there are not always enough people interested in showing for every "show quality" kitten. Many prospective owners state they "only want a pet" there is nothing wrong with that, however if you've toyed with the idea of showing a Maine Coon it is not as intimidating and expensive as you might think. We would love to discuss showing cats with you, we love finding show/alter homes and enjoy mentoring new exhibitors.

You can see photos of many of "Legendary Trutails Kittens " on the photo album page, both show/alters and pets ~ we feel every TruTails Maine Coon kitten is a Legend in it's own right and they all have the wonderful temperament expected in a Maine Coon ~ our show successes are just the frosting on the cake!

We believe a large part of a kitten's behavior and socialization skills are learned during the first several weeks of life from their mother and the humans around them. TruTails kittens remain with their mother until they are naturally weaned (typically 9 -12 weeks of age). Also during these critical first weeks, our kittens are pampered and handled often by their 'people parents' to ensure proper human socialization and to constantly monitor their continued health.

Answers To Some Frequently Asked Questions

How big....?
Maine Coons are a large breed of cat with big ears, broad chest, substantial boning, a long, hard muscled, rectangular body and a long flowing tail. Good muscle tone and density give the cat the appearance of power and size. The Yankee myth of 30-pound (13.5 kgs) cats is just that, a myth, males commonly reach 16-20 pounds (6-8 kgs) with females weighing 9-14 pounds (4-5.5 kgs), add to that 2-3 inches (5 cms) of winter coat, and people will swear they're looking at one BIG cat.

Although TruTails has some breeding cats that are larger than average ~ Kankoonkats Lil'Britches weighed in at 21 pounds at two years of age ~ we breed First for Quality, Health and Temperament NOT size. Even though our kittens are frequently quite large, we cannot guarantee size, and remember sometimes it's the smallest kitten in the litter who turns out to be the largest adult at maturity, go figure! Also, it is important to note that Maine Coons develop slowly, often not achieving their full size until they are 3 to 5 years of age.

What color....?
Our kittens are produced in a variety of colors; usually brown, red, and torbies (tortoiseshell tabbies) both with and without white markings. Colors in the Maine Coon Cat. Occasionally, we have some fun solid colors ~ black, calico, black & white, even a black smoke/white. We even have the potential to produce silver, smoke and an occasional blue kitten. However, we concentrate on type, health, size & temperament, and let Mother Nature play around with the colors & recessive genes for solid, smoke and dilute. We know the genetic color possibilities, but the end results... only time will tell.

What do they look like....?

We have had a lot of success in showing brown tabbies both with and without white, but our 2001-2002 "show crew" is made up of a Solid Black Male, his littermate a Brown Tabby w/White Female ("with white" cats have white markings on their chest, stomach and all four paws) and a beautiful Calico kitten. What fun we are having with this trio!

Where can I find a Maine Coon Kitten/Cat....?
